Background of the study
Traditional education, rooted in indigenous cultural practices, significantly shapes language use and preserves linguistic heritage. In Calabar, the Efik language is influenced by traditional educational methods that emphasize oral transmission, storytelling, and communal learning. This study explores how traditional education impacts Efik syntactic structures, highlighting the preservation of classical sentence patterns and the emergence of innovative constructions (Ekanem, 2023). Research indicates that traditional educational practices foster a deep understanding of linguistic norms transmitted through culturally rich interactions (Mfon, 2024). The study will analyze classroom observations, oral narratives, and community teaching sessions to document the syntactic features promoted by traditional methods. It will compare these structures with those emerging from modern curricula, examining the implications for language preservation and evolution (Udoh, 2025).
Statement of the problem
There is a lack of comprehensive research on the effects of traditional education on Efik syntactic structures in Calabar. While traditional methods are known to reinforce cultural transmission, their impact on formal grammatical constructions is underexplored (Akpan, 2023). Preliminary observations suggest that traditional education reinforces certain syntactic norms that differ from those promoted by modern schooling, leading to inconsistencies in language usage. This study seeks to systematically examine these influences to bridge the gap between indigenous and modern educational practices.
